Oratory of Saints Fermo and Rustico

In Cortenova, besides the parish church, there is another place worth visiting with attention: the Oratory of Saints Fermo and Rustico, also known as the San Fermo Oratory.

Small, discreet, and deeply connected to local history, the oratory represents an important part of the village’s religious and family memory. Unlike larger churches open to the whole community, it was created as a more intimate place, connected to an influential local family.

Its construction began in 1583 by Margherita Del Prato Mornico, within the complex of the Mornico family houses, a prominent family in Cortenova. The Mornico family was connected to ironworking and to the local notability of Valsassina, belonging to that group of important families that helped shape the economic, religious, and social life of the valley.

The oratory was completed in 1591, a date indicated on the entrance portal. This makes the building even more interesting: when visitors pass in front of it, they are not simply looking at a small old chapel, but at a direct witness to Cortenova at the end of the 16th century.

The saints to whom the oratory is dedicated, Fermo and Rustico, are martyrs venerated in the Christian tradition of Northern Italy. This devotion strengthens Cortenova’s connection with Lombard religious tradition and with the popular faith that shaped life in small mountain communities for centuries.

The beauty of the oratory lies precisely in its simplicity. It does not impress because of its size, but because of its atmosphere: a quiet building connected to families, private devotion, and the memory of a time when religion, work, and social prestige were closely intertwined.

When observing the oratory, it is worth imagining the context in which it was born: Cortenova was a mountain village, but not isolated from history. Valsassina had activities connected to iron, forges, enterprising families, and internal routes through the valley. The San Fermo Oratory is a small window into this ancient world.

It is also interesting to remember that, within the historical boundaries of the parish of Cortenova, the Oratory of Saints Fermo and Rustico is mentioned together with another public oratory in Prato San Pietro, dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. This shows how the religious life of the village was not concentrated only in the main church, but also spread through small places of devotion connected to different areas and families of the community.

Visit tip: the San Fermo Oratory is a short but meaningful visit. It is worth stopping by calmly, especially after visiting the Parish Church of Saints Gervasius and Protasius. Together, these two places help visitors better understand ancient Cortenova: a village shaped by faith, families, work, mountains, and memory.
